Fee Waivers for Pre-College Assessments

Fee waivers are available for families who meet income eligibility guidelines for the PSAT, SAT, and ACT exams. Fee reductions are available for AP exams, and when coupled with federally subsidized funding, the cost is often reduced to $0.

Students who use fee waivers for the SAT are also entitled to other benefits like college application fee waivers at many colleges. All students intending to use a fee waiver must see his/her school counselor to ensure he/she meets the eligibility guidelines and receive their 12-digit identification number for test registration.

Here are a few other points about SAT and SAT Subject Test fee waivers:

  • Students eligible for fee waivers can register online with a unique fee-waiver number that is printed on each fee-waiver card.
  • All required fields must be completed on the card for it to be valid. This applies whether the student is registering online or by paper.
  • The 12-digit fee-waiver identification number can be used only once.
  • Fee waivers can be used through early August; the date is indicated on the card.
  • Fee waivers are not permitted with late and standby registration, except for the October administration, when fee waivers can be used with late registrations.
  • Eligible students receive a total of four fee waivers during their academic career – two for the SAT and two for the SAT Subject Tests.
  • Students may choose to use their fee waivers for the SAT in either their junior or senior years.
  • Students may choose to use their fee waivers for the SAT Subject Tests in their freshman, sophomore, junior or senior years.
  • Students who are not yet in ninth grade may not use fee waivers.
  • Only those students who use fee waivers to register for SAT or SAT Subject Test administrations are eligible to receive Request for Waiver of College Application Fee forms.
  • Students may receive a total of four forms to request college application waivers.

Below, you will find information from ACT on fee waivers.

You must meet all of the following requirements:

  1. Currently enrolled in high school in the 11th or 12th grade.
  2. Either a United States citizen or testing in the U. S., U.S. territories, or Puerto Rico.
  3. Meet one or more indicators of economic need listed on the ACT Fee Waiver form.

If you are eligible, you may use a maximum of two separate fee waivers total. The waiver is used once you register, even if you do not test on the requested test date.

IMPORTANT: To take full advantage of the waiver, you must follow through and test on your registered test date.

Fee waivers cover only the basic registration fee for your test option, including up to four college choices (if you provide valid codes when you register). Waivers do not cover the late registration fee, test date or test center changes, standby fee, or any other services.

You cannot request a fee waiver directly from ACT; you must contact your high school counselor. If you receive an ACT Fee Waiver Form, follow the “Student Directions” on it for your registration method (or if requesting Special Testing).

Note: If you register online, and register during the late period or request any additional services, you must enter a credit card to pay those fees before submitting your registration.
